Contemporary Loft Conversion in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire

This project involved transforming an unused loft space into a bright and spacious master bedroom with an en‑suite bathroom. The conversion formed part of the client’s wider plan to increase living space without extending into their garden. Works included structural alterations, a full-width rear dormer, custom-built storage, upgraded insulation, and all plumbing/electrical installations

Client Requirements

 

The client wanted to:

• Create a large master suite with generous head height

• Add a modern en-suite with walk‑in shower

• Maximise natural light with roof windows and dormer glazing

• Integrate built‑in wardrobes without compromising the layout

• Improve the home’s overall value and energy efficiency

Our Solution

 

We approached the project with a focus on maximising space, light and practicality:

• Installed a full-width rear dormer, providing excellent headroom and increasing usable floor area.

• Added two Velux roof windows at the front for balanced natural light.

• Strengthened the existing structure with new steel beams and floor joists.

• Created a luxury en‑suite, featuring:

  • Walk‑in rainfall shower

  • Contemporary stone-effect tiles

  • Wall-hung vanity unit

  • Underfloor heating

• Designed and built bespoke cabinetry to fit the eaves, offering hidden yet generous storage.

• Used high-grade insulation to significantly improve energy performance.

• Installed modern LED lighting with separate zones for bedroom and en‑suite.

• Finished the staircase with a bespoke oak balustrade to match the home’s existing aesthetic.

Challenges and How We Overcame Them

 

Challenge 1: Limited existing head height

• We reconfigured the dormer design and lowered the loft floor slightly to meet building regulations while maintaining ceiling height on the first floor.

Challenge 2: Tight access to the loft during construction

• We installed temporary external access to minimise disruption inside the home and maintain safety.

The final space is a bright, elegant master suite with a calming, modern feel. The dormer provides far-reaching views over Hoddesdon, and the bespoke fitted storage blends seamlessly into the room, giving it a truly uncluttered look.
